Hoideology

I am grateful for my team of research apprentices who have been going out of their way on a voluntary basis to work with me on these projects that I have initiated and planned out to do at Hoideology. Each of their involvement mainly includes weekly one-hour zoom meetings with me to (a) discuss on the contents of the research annotation that I have done over that week or the weeks, (b) process qualitative or quantitative data that the specific project may involve (e.g., for the Parental Value Study and the Domestic Violence and Homicides in Hong Kong Study), (c) co-host and record theory presentation and/or commentary videos such as for the WhatIsAGoodMother_Project Channel’s parenting literature review and applications series, and/or (d) conduct literature search together to prepare for information organization (e.g., for the Technology and Brain for Parents Study).

It is my privilege to introduce each of them here.

Genie Chu is currently a Year-4 undergraduate student at the University of Sydney majoring in psychology and philosophy. Since December 2024, she has begun working with me on my WhatIsAGoodMother_Project, serving as Undergraduate Research Apprentice for the WhatIsAGoodMother_Project Survey and the WhatIsAGoodMother_Project Channel. Her contributions include the compilation of survey items for the WhatIsAGoodMother_Project Survey, fetching references for building up our literature lists, and serving as co-host, theory presenter, and/or commentator to WIAGM’s parenting literature review and applications Season 1 (2025-2026) and Season 2 (which is on-going in 2026-2027). The project could not have been made possible without Genie’s collaboration and consistent and steadfast support to its mission. Watching our YouTube videos, you have probably felt amazed at Genie’s insight and wit when we discussed the topics on parenting and its effect and the related psychological concepts that we study in our field. Many applause to Genie’s contributions! And, best wishes to her last year of study at the University of Sydney!

Jaffi Wong is a graduate of the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Psychology program from The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) in 2025 and my former student while I was teaching there as Psychology Lecturer. She also worked for me as Undergraduate Research Apprentice while I was Research and Evaluation Director for the multi-million dollar project funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust called CLAP@JC-Schools/EdUHK in 2023. Recently, she earned her Master’s degree in Applied Psychology from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2026 and has begun working as a part-time Research Assistant at the Hong Kong Metropolitan University. Her other part-time job and passion is working as a badminton coach at a local sports association. Jaffi’s contributions to Hoideology mainly involves data collection for the WhatIsAGoodMother_Project Survey in 2025 and the present on-going data collection, compilation, and processing for our qualitative study of Parental Values. Through the qualitative method, this study aims to compare chatroom verbatim of a sample of English speakers obtained from Quora.com and a sample of Hong Kong Chinese speakers obtained from BabyKingdom.com on the types and kinds of parental values that these anonymous respondents expressed through their chats on those platforms. We hope to be able to release the results of this study soon by the end of Fall.

Nicole Li has just joined Hoideology this Fall! She is currently a Year-2 psychology student at the University of Hong Kong. As a curious and inquisitive sophomore in psychology, besides having already completed a summer internship at a local clinic this past summer, she has also begun developing her own knowledge-transfer experience by setting up an IG Channel that addresses Hong Kong students’ struggles in expressing their psychological needs and yearning for healing and knowledge on possible resolutions. Her IG Channel is called Healing Chat. At each episode, Nicole interviews an expert or professional in the field on a specific subject matter about psychological health that her audiences would be puzzling about. If you have time, please support her by visiting her IG (Healing Chat) to witness such a wonderful initiative by a psychology student! Nicole will be involved in the Technology and Brain for Parents Study that we will begin to work on starting this Fall.
