Doctoral Guided Research (Prof. S. Alvin Leung): I investigated a structural equation model (SEM) of vocational interest and self-efficacy profile characteristics (known as “secondary constructs” in Holland, 1985, 1997; or simply as “profile” in Tracey, 2002b) in predicting career choice readiness and status in adolescents. Four interest/self-efficacy profile characteristic predictors tested were interest differentiation, interest/self-efficacy congruence (or discrepancy), interest elevation, and self-efficacy elevation—measured by the administration of the Personal Globe Inventory-Activity version (PGI-A; Tracey, 2002b). Previous research on the effect of interest differentiation on career outcome has been equivocal. The effect of interest/self-efficacy congruence (or discrepancy) has been under-researched despite the identification of “internal conflicts” as an indicator of decision difficulties. My study used both Holland-based and Tracey-based indexes for measuring interest differentiation and interest/self-efficacy congruence (or discrepancy) to evaluate their differential effects. Self-efficacy elevation was tested the first time in research to parallel the measure of interest elevation, providing a test of the social cognitive career theory. In constructing a career choice process-status model based on Albion & Fogarty’s (2002) method, a career choice readiness measurement model by Dybwad (2008) on adolescent career decision making was adopted. This study offers empirical evidence toward theoretical integration and practical applications toward improvement on inventoried interest/self-efficacy profile interpretation, particularly for Hong Kong high school students in their specific educational context. Future research and limitations were also discussed. (https://repository.lib.cuhk.edu.hk/en/item/cuhk-1291759)Spring 2014-Fall 2015
